WWI FACT FILE- Gallipoli
The Gallipoli Campaign, also known as the Battle of the Dardanelles, took place from 25 April 1915 - 9 January 1916.
It was fought between the British and French Allies and the Ottoman Empire (Central Powers).
The reason for the campaign is the Allies wanted a sea route to Russia... this is why-
By late 1914, the Western Front in France had reached a draw. For the Allies to win the war, they had to attack from Russia. However, the Arctic sea was frozen over. Russia needed to be able to help, so the Allies attacked Gallipoli.
The Allies attacked on 25 April to charge towards the capital of the Ottoman Empire, Constantinople. They wanted to attack on 23 April but they couldn't because of bad weather.
The ANZACs were told by the English to attack a certain beach. However, the English got the destination wrong, so the ANZACs were ambushed. They had to climb up a hill which the Ottomans were at the top of. They were shot down. Over 10,000 ANZACs died that day.
Many other battles were fought that year, with the Allies losing many. Civilians in Europe heard of this and urged the Allies to retreat from the Dardanelles. After several other defeats, the allies withdrew from Gallipoli in January 1916.
141,000 Allies died.
256,000 Ottomans and Germans died.
